Understanding NDIS Plan

Navigate your NDIS plan with confidence. Learn about the three funding categories and how to make the most of your supports.

What is an NDIS Plan?

Your NDIS plan is a personalized document that outlines the funded supports you'll receive to help you achieve your goals. It's developed in partnership with you, taking into account your current situation, aspirations, and the reasonable and necessary supports you need.

The Three Budget Categories

1. Core Supports

Core supports help with your everyday activities and can be used flexibly across four categories:

  • Assistance with Daily Life - help with personal care, meal prep, and household tasks
  • Transport - getting to work, education, or community activities
  • Consumables - continence products, low-cost assistive technology
  • Social and Community Participation - engaging in community, social, and recreational activities

2. Capacity Building

Capacity building supports help you build independence and skills for the future:

  • Support Coordination - help to implement your plan and connect with providers
  • Improved Living Arrangements - assistance finding and maintaining accommodation
  • Increased Social and Community Participation - building skills to engage with your community
  • Finding and Keeping a Job - employment-related supports
  • Improved Relationships - developing social and communication skills
  • Improved Health and Wellbeing - exercise programs, dietitians, therapy
  • Improved Learning - help with education and skill development
  • Improved Life Choices - decision-making supports
  • Improved Daily Living - developing skills for everyday tasks

3. Capital Supports

Capital supports are for higher-cost items that are less frequently purchased:

  • Assistive Technology - equipment and devices (wheelchairs, communication devices, hearing aids)
  • Home Modifications - changes to your home to improve accessibility
  • Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) - funding for accessible housing if you have extreme functional impairment

Key Tips for Managing Your Plan

  • Review your plan carefully and ask questions if anything is unclear
  • Keep track of your budget spending using the myplace portal or NDIS app
  • Start using your supports early in your plan period
  • Consider using a plan manager or support coordinator if you need help
  • Keep records of all services and invoices
  • Request a plan review if your circumstances change significantly
  • Prepare for your plan review 3 months before it's due

Understanding your NDIS plan empowers you to make informed choices about your supports and work effectively toward your goals. Don't hesitate to reach out to your planner, support coordinator, or providers if you need clarification or assistance.
